IKARUGA!

Looks like a great but short-lived system has seen its last game: Treasure's Ikaruga Comes to Dreamcast. A rich-looking arcade shooter drawn from the arcades, this could be the last full-fledged release for the system that brought you Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur,
Skies of Arcadia, Space Channel 5. You'll be able to see the sequels to most of these on other systems (SoAL!); as Sega has finally stopped hemorraging money now that they are out of the hardware business.

BTW - from that Skies of Arcadia feature story I linked to above (composed in part by one of the members of the band eE), they have a list of been there, done that - RPG cliches. Pretty amusing.

i read about IKARUGA awhile ago, and then forgot about it. those screen shots look amazing. and from what ive heard from friends, this game is fucking intense.

then again, treasure is a small obscure yet phenomenal company, that deserves every penny.

ill probably shell out the $66 (which is more than i paid for my used DC, controllers, mem card, and games altogether!) for the import...

I tried Ikaruga out a bit at work yesterday. A friend of mine on my team imported it. It was so freaking amazingly tight. It reminded me of some of the best overhead shooters, and even made me nostalgic for R-type in the way that it made you hunker down in a corner trying to avoid being killed at some points in the maze-like levels. And that polarity/flip control thing adds so much simple depth to the game.

Seeing that game made me lament for my DC one last time. It looks *that* good. It's a crying shame that Sega couldn't get the marketing train rolling, since they had finally (since the Genesis) made a system that you could be proud to own. It's still my favorite chunk of hardware.

"Ikaruga" may be the best space shmup ever made. I am not sure because I still had no chance to play Treasure's previous space shooters, "Radiant Silvergun" (Saturn) and "Bangai-O" (N64, DC), but anyway, it's the best I've ever played --- and I've played quite a few great ones.

If you like shmups... no, if you like action... wait, I mean, if you like videogames AT ALL, be sure to get this game! Available for either the Dreamcast (Japan only) or the Gamecube (soon to get USA and Europe releases by Infogrames)
