GameCube: Let the Sun Shine In

I've been so busy playing Halo and Grand Theft Auto 3 that I haven't paid much attention to the third console, the eternal Nintendo. According to Ferrago.co.uk, Mario Sunshine is now among the fastest-selling games of all time, outpacing Halo and GTA. And maybe driving some interest in Nintendo's GameCube?

will the Mario franchise ever die?

i hope not! i've generally enjoyed the experience of playing mario games in the past. even though they are never very complicated, a lot of work goes into making them fun to play. now that i think about it, it's hard to explain what makes those games so enjoyable--is it the sense of humor? the references to older games in the series? the way they take a simple style of gameplay and then come up with 100 different clever variations for different levels? all i know is that i've beaten luigi's mansion three times...

though i admit i was raised on mario, i think the little bastard spaghetti slurper is seriously played out and needs to be put out to stud. or turned into glue. either one.

i am cuirious to play it. but not curious enough to go out and buy a 150 dollar piece of equipment to play it on. especially since i can see nintendo being good to the children, but i want my gta madness fix.

do you have any interest in GTA Vice City? it looks alright.

two words: metroid prime. the only reason I'd consider rocking the cube full time.

what about the new Zelda? is that just for kids now?

Posted by: justin on September 10, 2002 11:58 AM

as devoted as i am to nintendo, i have to say that mario sunshine hasn't proved worth my money. people are buying it out of nostalgia & brand recognition. Zelda looked less than perfectly finished at E3, so i'd sooner hold my breath for Metroid prime.

yes, the gamecube console has the worst selection of games currently amongst all the consoles. this does not imply, however, that no gamecube game is worth playing. i have played through eternal darkness: sanity's requiem, resident evil, luigi's mansion, and super monkey ball, and i've found them all to be quite good games (particularly eternal darkness... which i should review here at some point).

i'm a bit afraid about the new cell-shaded zelda, but excited about metroid prime, animal crossing, wario world, etc.

plus, god damn is the gamecube cute ^_^

Sure, there's a great deal of brand recognition behind SMS... but there's also a very solid game there. Some levels are easy, lots are hard... and it's all extremely pretty. The word 'charming' comes to mind quite a bit. Nice amount of mission variety too. Biggest trouble is the camera, which can get totally flaky at times.

And as for games (like Mario, Zelda) becoming "just for kids"... what does that even mean? Just because a game has a bright colorful look doesn't mean it's "for kids." I don't get why adult gamers have to be so judgemental, based solely on graphical look. Games that are for kids have gameplay that's for kids (like the recent GameCube Mickey Mouse game)... the graphics are immaterial.

I'd venture to say that more kids are playing GTA3 than will play the new Zelda anyway.
