Nostalgia
Saturday I went to the California Extreme classic coin-op and pinball arcade games expo. For $25 bucks you could spend 12 hours playing any of the games available - provided they still worked. Some were for sale; others were emphatically NOT for sale. I didn't see a single game there made after 1992. There was a beautiful Discs of Tron game, and several fragile-looking mechanical games. But it all made me a little sad. Because arcades are a dying phenomenon. And shows like the California Extreme Expo are more like museums, these days - full of dusty memories. I wonder, will we feel the same way about consoles in ten years? Already I feel a sad nostalgia for the Dreamcast. Does it belong in a museum? Posted by jane at September 09, 2002 10:48 AMComments
im more nostalgic for when California Extreme was only $10 to get in, and was held in a makeshift rented space in some no-name strip mall, as opposed to the relatively recent move to the however. there is a certain basement in berkeley keeping it real. every friday, its open to anyone who walks in (the usual suspects are: aging leftists and hippies, young punks, 50s enthusiasts, etc). once inside, one is privy to the over 2 dozen old time electro-mechanical pinball machines packed snugly side by side up and down the basement. they are all set to free play and there is no charge at the door. the cost is just finding it. alcohol and marijuana tend to flow freely, as does the intellectual and political discussion, which is a perfect bonus. i havent been there in ages, so if anyone is interested in helping me find it again, drop me a line. pepito pea Posted by: pepitopea on September 10, 2002 10:52 PMoh. contact: aiken@uclink4.berkeley.edu pepito pea Posted by: pepitopea on September 10, 2002 11:28 PMpepito, i think we need to go on this odyssey together.
