It's Official: Microsoft buys Rare
According to this article from CNN, Nintendo has confirmed the sale of its 49% stake in Rare, Ltd., and Microsoft's subsequent purchase of the company. Rare is a company familiar to Nintendo fans everywhere, having made Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong Country, Starfox, and many other classic Nintendo titles. Starfox Adventures is said to be the last game Rare will produce for Nintendo, and while Nintendo will retain rights to the Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong and Starfox series, Rare will keep Perfect Dark, Conker, and Banjo-Kazooie, and will likely develop future X-box-based sequels. Editorial: Along with Nintendo itself, Rare always developed the best games for the N64 console. Rare games are known for having excellent controls and graphics, as well as simply being the most fun to play. As a gamecube owner I am very disappointed with this news, and I can't imagine why Nintendo chose not to buy Rare when it had the opportunity. Rare's former partnership with Nintendo represented at least a third of the value of buying a Nintendo console, and now that this partnership has dissolved I am less optimistic about the future of the gamecube. This is depressing. And Rare didn't just develop great games for the N64 - they've been cookin' up delicious second party entertainment since the NES days. Remember Battletoads? How about R.C. Pro Am? Wizards and Warriors? . . . and so many more. I remember seeing pictures of Lord Byron's castle in my dogeared copy of Nintendo Power. Oh, how the mighty have . . . well, sold out. And Nintendo - what, what, what WERE you thinking? For shame. Posted by: Nat on September 24, 2002 01:35 PMon the other hand, Square has started developing for Nintendo again, which is great. Square is a wonderful match for Nintendo. i'm looking forward to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance! Posted by: jane on September 24, 2002 03:21 PMI'm sure the business of the various deals is all sound for all parties... but the official MS press release is hilariously misleading. My biggest gripe is that I'll have to buy another console for the next Conker's game. But this isn't the End of Nintendo, like I've heard some fans cry. Rare isn't the only good dev out there, in fact, I'm not entirely sure I'd call every single Rare effort a masterpiece anyway. The real rub here is the appearance, it *looks like* Nintendo lost an A+ Number One Partner, so therefore it *looks like* Nintendo is run by buffoons and doomed to failure. That's the angle I've heard most MS devotees parrot, and it's all propaganda. This is a very sad thing to hear. Some of my favorite games on the 64 and some of the sequels i was looking forward to were from rare. Games like Perfect Dark and conker(Even if a sequel hasn't been announced, you know one will eventually be made) Nintendo says that only a 1.2 percent of their sales have been thanks to Rare sales, but that's only from this year. They are not counting the years of Goldeneye, banjo kazzoie, donkey kong...etc. This wasn't very smart of Nintendo, they should have bought Rare instead of lettin Microsoft buy it because even if Rare wasn't a major part of Nintendo, it will boost sales for Xbox because they are going to have already popular games, which will be bad for Nintendo. Oh well, i guess i will have to get X box to get Conker. Posted by: Rick on October 1, 2002 04:03 PMThis truely is a stormy day for all nintendo fans around the world, the gloriuos triumphs of goldeneye, banjo kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conkers, and Blast Corps will never recieve a next generation rebirth on a nintendo console ever. And allthough this will undoubtedly bruise the nintendo legacy (and i have no doubt that nintendo of Japan and America will feel the shockwave that was rare). But admidst loss arises hope,Retro, a previosly dormant 2nd party developer has awoken from its deep slumber and brought with it Metroid Prime.... and didnt Rare start there legendary line up of games on 64 with a 1st person shooter also? So in the end i dont think nintendo fans should not get too worried, although everyone will surely miss rares masterpieces, there transferal to Microsoft has only made more room for Retro Posted by: Mangels on October 13, 2002 05:16 AMHello GameGirls Advance is loser than Boys does. I love Gameboy Advance is Boys superior than Girls forever. Posted by: John on April 15, 2003 01:50 PMMade no sense that did. Away, go. Posted by: Another Mike on April 21, 2003 12:27 AMRare was a good developer me thinks. And although A PS2 I do have my truely favorite company is Nintendo with thier allstar lineup and i wished they would have made Jonanna Daark a member of it for good. This stinks because Banjo Kazooie is like my favorite game. Stupid Microsoft. That is bad because I have a PS2 and a Gamecube, but I dont have an X-Box. Too bad for Nintendo, Rare was their partner that made the good games. Now Nintendo will probably go out of buisness. This stinks because Banjo Kazooie is like my favorite game. Stupid Microsoft.
