BMX XXX
Acclaim is getting desperate or else they decided that "adult" gaming, a la Grand Theft Auto, translates into "nudity" and Lara Croft was too clothed. As reported by Steve Rhodes on Bud.com, the Wall Street Journal has a short article on BMX XXX, "the first major title to include live-action footage of nudity." Acclaim is spending as much as $4 million on an ad campaign with the slogan "Keep it dirty." If you consider the miles of pornographic games and DVDs sold around the world, BMX XXX's claims of being "the first" are somewhat disingenuous. But if they can get a marketed title with some pinups in it into mainstream stores, for mainstream consoles, they might have achieved something. Sales, advancement of the medium, opening it up to um, less-clothed avatars? Putting video of nude women into a sports game is perhaps mirroring the evolution of MTV, where spring break, jiggling boobs and whipped cream comprise a good chunk of content. If it's nude men, well, that's more provocative, an outreach to women gamers perhaps, or harkening back to SimCopter I dare to dream that the sexuality in BMX XXX will be fun and provocative. I fear it will be silly and exploitative. Posted by justin at October 14, 2002 05:48 PM | TrackBackComments
none of the screenshots i saw had anything other than the polygonned monstrosities that certain male character designers apparently consider "sexy" in female anatomy. also to consider: John Scalzo's excellent piece on Sex in Video Games and why it's not such a great thing: It's also all about timing. Developers have only had the ability to place these high-quality images and graphics into games in the last few years. The pixelated strippers of Duke Nukem 3D are quite different from the photorealistic DVD clips in Dave Mirra BMX XXX. Like kids on Halloween night, the developers are going a little overboard. Although "should we?" is not nearly as important a question as"who draws the line?" Who's to say where the line is that games and sex shouldn't cross. For me, receiving pornography as a reward for playing well just doesn't sit right. I'd prefer my porno and my games to remain separate. It's only fair not to judge these games until they're released. Playing a game yourself is the only true test of whether a game is good or skating by on it's graphics. But the question remains, how far is too far? Do gamers really need DVD clips of Scores girls as an incentive to play? Gamers everywhere are trying to prove their interest in gaming is a mature and adult hobby, but sometimes the most mature thing is knowing where to stop. Posted by: jane on October 14, 2002 08:46 PMWhen I interviewed 6 'humorous' gaming sites for Gamers.com, one of the questions I asked everyone was "Can there be a perfect mixture of porn and games?" The two most interesting answers? Lowtax of Something Awful: Chet of Old Man Murray: softcore could be fun. i kinda yearn for the "leisure suit larry in the land of the lounge lizards" days. admittedly, i was twelve when i played that, but still, what a fantastic game. cant say the same for the latter sequels though. pepito pea Posted by: pepitopea on October 16, 2002 04:03 PMWell there's a nice innocence to animated blocky 8-bit porn. It leaves more to the imagination, or in the case of Leisure Suit Larry, it's sophomoric comedy titillating to twelve year olds. I loved it too back then! And maybe now I'd chuckle at the references to Spiro Agnew and Las Vegas. But somehow it's a little bit more seedy-seeming when you put live-video of stripping ladies in a game. I suppose it will look silly in a few years, maybe in a few months even. There are a ton of porno games in Japan - mostly cartoon slide-shows based on branching narratives. Posted by: justin on October 17, 2002 08:20 PMhow about a "leisure suit larry"-esque PC game based on the film "Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN." if developed right and done tastefully... !AY CARUMBA! pepito pea Posted by: pepitopea on October 18, 2002 12:23 PMi'm very intrigued by this idea of sex in games... i'm not so interested in the slideshow porno "games" justin's talking about, because, well, they're slideshows. more like slightly interactive CD-ROMs than games (i'm guessing - i guess i should actually play one to find out for real). but i like games, and i like sex! so why can't the two be creative put together in a fun, non-exploitative, original, challenging way? hm. i think i will do a "sex in games" series here on GGA to explore this train of thought further. Posted by: jane on October 24, 2002 11:46 PMI've given "sex in games" more thought than it probably deserves. I do motion capture for games, and given our current level of technology, it would be wonderfully easy to have actors with suits on come in and...uh..."act" out the whole thing. There's even a disturbing feature of the software we use (Kaydara's Filmbox) that allows you to broadcast live 3D avatars acting out what the person in the motion capture suit is doing (it's designed for crazy virtual TV hosts). So yeah, live internet broadcast 3D sex shows that can interactively respond to what people want to see is possible.(think Neil Stephenson's Diamond Age ractors mentioned in another thread). Your favorite actor doing the nasty with your other favorite actor (think Final Fantasy: The Porn Movie). The technology to do this is already in place. It only takes someone with enough money (the mocap equipment is *expensive*) and the will to "go there" to make it happen. Posted by: Bowler on October 25, 2002 11:45 AMApart from sex, this game looks awful. Doesn't deserve atention. Posted by: chuchi on November 1, 2002 02:38 AMJust a sad way to sell a crap game I guess.. The humor that Acclaim put into the trailers is great... "You must eat a lot of weeners, you look like a whore", or that "Pimp Daddy" are just plain fun - if the game keeps up that kind of comedy I'll be the first to get it... and you guys shouldn't think of it as a Porn-Game but as a "Making Fun of all that Porn Industry and Geeks likin' it"-Game - but maybe you Americans have trouble with that. I think that's a nipple... :) Posted by: AuLbAtH on November 5, 2002 01:38 PMhey, i don't think we're all americans posting here, AuLbAth... and why would we have trouble with humour in games? Posted by: jane on November 6, 2002 04:59 AMThat reminds me of an article I read somewhere, oh here's the link: http://www.gamegirladvance.com/archives/2002/10/26/sex_in_games_rezvibrator.html Posted by: Shoez on November 6, 2002 06:03 AMThat reminds me of an article I read somewhere, oh here's the link: http://www.gamegirladvance.com/archives/2002/10/26/sex_in_games_rezvibrator.html Posted by: Shoez on November 6, 2002 06:03 AMY'know, when I look at this game, I realise that it could be extremely cool to have an added incentive for collecting every-single-sodding-coin on any particular level. The more coins you collect, the more porn you see! Genius :) Times like this I wish I was 16 again, and full of unnecessary amounts of testosterone. Steve ;)~ This game seems kinda stupid to me, but yes, if they get it marketable to console and stuff maybe it will open up a new market. There's always been PC xxx games of many types, now maybe they'll be some console ones. With this and the Rez thing, the world is definately, 'openning up'. Posted by: CJ McT0sT on November 6, 2002 12:31 PMto jane: Besides I don't know what's wrong with 'em complaining about graphics... the girls in the game might be blocky, so WHAT ? As long as it will have some kind of original gameplay, a two-player mode, cool characters, tight controls and replay value mixed with the above mentioned humor I will get it - no matter what ! (And I need some "fun sport" game for the Xbox as well, hate Tony Hawk and Dave Mirra... ) Posted by: AuLbAtH on November 6, 2002 01:10 PMYou know what concerns me about a game like BMX XXX? Sure .. nude people riding around on bikes, wahoo ... they can go that far in realism, but can they provide the skin gashes and ashpalt burn? Dude, there's a reason why protective gear is supplied to riders .. and theres also a reason why riders don't ride nude ... ashphalt brun on your doo doo will provide a watertap of gushing blood. *shudder* You;ve all seen a scraped knee to the bone? I don;t know how fast a hormone killer a booby scrape would look like! eww! Posted by: RAdiOSamuRai on November 6, 2002 07:25 PMHey.. the last point was great!! how true!! what happens when a naked chick falls doing a 20 foot jump? and the humor in this game just might be what you describe AuLbAtH, but I have a feeling it will not be... A game with naked chicks in it, and named "BMXXX", and put out by a company by acclaim... i think its just a low-brow tactic aimed at getting people talking about the game, talking about the company, and maybe the few people who find the jokes funny may buy it. Personally there are NOT many games which are TRULY funny.. if this game is - it is worth a buy, but you do NOT need nudity to be funny.. There is a game called... hmm Grandia II that is hilarious, because the main character is an ass... thats one of the funniest games I've played.. not many others are funny, and games which base most of their gameplay on BEING funny usually fail miserably, because they're NOT funny. We'll see about this one, but i get the feeling that it will not be funny at all, maybe only to pre-pubescent boys and pre-pubescent adults [i mean older geeks who laugh at anything remotely sexual]. Posted by: Ifrit on November 7, 2002 03:26 AMwww.mygamer.com ownz j00 Posted by: Dale on November 8, 2002 01:10 PMoh wow, they're having a "Ms BMX XXX" contest? ... anyway, i've read articles in which the developers of the game compare it to American Pie, The Sopranos, and Sex in the City for its humor/sex content. shoot, i'd be thrilled if it were half as witty, funny, sexy as American Pie! or if any game were! but let's face it, American Pie was a good movie that dealt honestly with both boys' and girls' sexualities in what i thought was a fresh, light-hearted slapstick format. sure, it was a little nasty, but in a good-humored, equal-opportunity way. i could be wrong, but somehow i doubt the tone and content of BMX XXX will approach American Pie's. Posted by: jane on November 9, 2002 12:41 AMsee here is the facts as i see them... I thought American Pie sucked. Which goes to prove that different people have different tastes in humor. It is the same in movies, tv shows, books, and of course video games. As for the nudity I think there is nothing wrong with it. Do I get turned on by pixilated girls riding around on bikes no.. do i have a problem with it no. You see there is a thing at stake here called freedom. If the makers of BMX XXX want to put that in thier game good for them... go for it, and if you dont want to buy it, fine dont. I think there is a bigger issue here.. There has never been a home console game in the US that had full frontal nudity.. and that this game has it is a benchmark... remember back when Mortal Kombat first came out, there was a media circus about all the blood and gore. Where only a few years later it is perfectly acceptable to have graphic violence. Nudity will be the same way.. all it takes is someone to break that taboo and take the flack.. All i have to say is thank you Acclaim for having the guts to do so Posted by: FuCt Messiah on November 11, 2002 12:59 AMI like orange and cream pops. They are ice creamy and tart at the same time! I kind of like to mush it together and stuff, but at its' best, the two flavors only mix in my stomach... Posted by: Tatsu[Redeemedsoft] on November 11, 2002 01:04 PMI think the game will be cool. All it is, is a naked version on Tony Hawk. If you like tony Hawk, you'll like this game, big deal if there is naked chicks, thats just a bonus, the Japs have been doing it since atari. Posted by: biff digums on November 20, 2002 12:56 PMThe problem is that it's getting slammed in the reviews. It's evidently not a good game. So comparing it to Pro Skater but with boobs might not be a good analogy. What we're going to be left with is a game that focuses on the boobs and not on the gameplay, and I think that's the main issue here. We're talking about Acclaim: the company now known for advertising on tombstones and boobs in video-games. I don't hear anyone writing stories on how great their games are. Just on how "groundbreaking" their marketing department is. SegaCD games bombed because they focused on what was considered groundbreaking - grainy full motion video - and not on actual gameplay. So just because she's naked on a bike doesn't mean it's groundbreaking or a good game. It means it's nothing more than a cheap marketing gimmick. Will it sell a lot of copies? Probably. Will it get a favorable write-up in the next installment of that History of Video-Games hardcover book as a groundbreaking innovator of videogames that paved the way for mature, adult themed quality video-game entertainment in the 21st century? I doubt it. Posted by: Bowler on November 20, 2002 10:58 PMi like naked wemen Posted by: Justin on January 12, 2003 02:08 PMLOL. Posted by: Bowler on January 13, 2003 08:52 AMDid you know that the youngest age to legally have sex in australia, is 10? P.S.: Don't expect many responses FROM me. Posted by: Hyper-Mecha-Sonic 5000 on January 21, 2003 04:17 PMHi i like to say that its cool that they put nude chicks in the game,,i hope there are some real nude chick show betwen brakes and in the intro of the game...oh most important they should put some part when they have sex and show evrything,,because then its real xxx game,,and that wouldnt be good for the samller kids like 10-14 years old but from 15-and up its alrigt to play a game with porn stuff,at least they can have some fun....or they just should sel it only for 18 year old ones...but i tell you they should have some hardcore sex scene in it (men-woman having sex).....good if they have that will buy it so i can have fun at night when no body home... Posted by: lgeoman on January 26, 2003 04:09 AMI Love these kind of work like sex in the games,I want to say that it is really nice to put nude girls and seens in the game ,by this act every game is more enjoylable,e.g DukeNukum,Tombrider .But i want to say that make them whole nude so every one can enjoy more,or give there nude sceen as a bonus in ending the stage or any challange .thanks Posted by: Moazzam on February 21, 2003 09:27 PMi like licking tits Posted by: poo on May 15, 2003 12:20 PMI really think this game couldn't get more perverted... Well... maybe it could if they put in more skin other than breasts. And I'm sure everyone who buys this CRAP (other than gamers that do reviews) are real big IDIOTS! I mean... I'm a 13 year old telling you guys that this is perverted! Fight your hormones and don't buy this game! Its graphics are sucky anyways! I mean... for the xbox version. It has freagin PS2 graphics in an XBOX console! That is like PULSERACER if anyone knows what I'm talking about.
