North Korean Games
All this attention is paid to South Korea as a capital of video gaming - what about gaming in North Korea? This piece, Personal Computers and Games in North Korea, written by an ex-Professor at Kim Il Sung University, describes how the content of a fighting game was seen as anti-Communist and ultimately threatening to the state: A guy, whose girlfriend was kidnapped by a gang, had to beat his enemies in their den one by one to rescue his fiance. So well was the program prepared and so hard, yet so fascinating was it made to get to the goal, that once a person started it, he or she could hardly stop until they had finished it.The rest of the article describes how some North Koreans finally agreed they could play "ideology-free" computer games. I wonder if it is side scrolling action game like 'Street of Rage'. I remember living in Seoul for few years when I was younger. My teacher often stressed how dangerous communism was, or how close Pyungyang (sp?) was to Seoul. She even said- to scare children in her class, I hope- if they shoot a missle from Pyungyang, it could get to Seoul in 10 minutes. (@_@ and i ran to my mother screaming that we need to move further south!) that's pretty serious propoganda. It reminds me of a schizophrenic who believes everyone is out to get him/her. i mean, c'mon, it's a pretty long stretch to view horned red-faced pixelated gangsters as communists. unless, of course, propoganda has really digressed to the point of being too subtle. but then, how would you determine what is and what isn't propoganda? thankfully, the only propoganda in the US is through history books, Bush's obvious attempts to vilify the east, and the middle east conflict game for PS2 in which the player has the chance to snipe Saddam, all of which are blatant attempts by the Man to keep us from knowing the TRUTH! Posted by: jon on November 9, 2002 03:23 PMI haven't read the article, but I'm assuming that game is Shenmue 1/2 Posted by: Kun on November 10, 2002 11:08 PMShenmue 1 or 2 might have had characters offensive to communists, but I suspect he's talking about something more along the lines of "Double Dragon" or even before that - if they even had video games before that? Kidding - The author of this article is talking about the early 1980s, when computers first arrive at the university in North Korea where he was a student. Games from the early 1980s - that would be the type of games I remember playing on the Apple ][ - titles like Karateka - which, if you look at this picture and if you remember the plotline, it seems like Karateka might be what this guy is describing: Except that Karateka was designed by Jordan Mechner, a designer from the United States, who later went on to make Prince of Persia, amongst other games. Posted by: justin on November 13, 2002 12:18 AMAhhhhhhh! Karateka!!!!! I had totally forgotten how freaking awesome that game was! That picture was like a total flashback! Posted by: Bowler on November 14, 2002 09:22 PMCOMMUNISM RULLEZ! - By a Communist Russian guy named Moejoe Posted by: moejoe on November 15, 2002 04:24 PMCOMMUNISM RULLEZ! - By a Communist Russian guy named Moejoe Posted by: moejoe on November 15, 2002 04:24 PMCOMMUNISM RULLEZ! - By a Communist Russian guy named Moejoe Posted by: moejoe on November 15, 2002 04:27 PM'girlfriend was kidnapped by a gang' - so kidnapper gangs are communist and heroes are western. 'content of a fighting game was seen as anti-Communist and ultimately threatening to the state' So kidnapper gangs are how the North Korean state (admits to) normally working. And heroism is bad because communists think we should all work together and ownership of girlfriends is wrong. Girlfriends should be owned by the state! And gangs should share them. Ouch. Communism N.Korean style sucks. Posted by: Alex on November 16, 2002 05:01 AMI totally agree with Alex by calling this game "anti communist" they smack themselves. Posted by: William on December 2, 2002 12:11 AMHuh. Scaring kids who live in Seoul about North Korea like that hardly seems like that big a deal. I mean, propaganda? How? It's true, if DPRK lauched a missle it could hit Seoul in 10min or so. Actually, I hardly think NK would bother with missles, they have enough artillery lined up on the DMZ to reduce Seoul to rubble in appoximately 24 hours. Before you dicount stuff like that, remember that NK attack SK in 1950 and pretty much destroyed the whole country. Not to meantion, NK still occasionaly runs guerrilla raids across the DMZ. Heck, just before I left Korea (About 8mo ago) NK lauched a missle at a SK destroyer and killed 26 sailors.... kinda makes you wonder about these efforts to buddy up with these guys. Posted by: Jim on March 2, 2003 09:54 PMDid anybody mention Kim Jong Il's admission (on September 17th, 2002) to the abduction of 11 Japanese nationals during the 1970s and 80s? Apparently somebody in the government was trying to cover for those. Post a comment
