Star-crossed Romance
A while ago I found a treasure trove of newsgroups run by young women and teenagers who wrote romantic/erotic fan fiction about boy bands starring themselves and their friends. It was fun to watch the fiction flex to include newcomers and their requests ("Oh, I want to be Ashley's best friend! And I have red hair, and green eyes, and my favorite color is blue. Can you write me in?") This was, I thought, a different kind of MUD, and almost 100% female in population. I started searching for similar phenomena and can across this delightful fan fic starring Lance Bass of *NSync and the notorious Eminem. The set up is delicious, and there are extremely amusing touches which lend an air of playfulness to the story. I love that whenever Eminem gets pissed off he runs himself a bubble bath, or that Chris and Joey are portrayed as the only non-gay members of *NSync (well, duh). It is also an interesting investigation into gay relationships. Lance is, of course, the more femme of the pair, his "jade-green eyes" ever-ready to well up with big beautiful tears. Eminem growls and scowls and swears but underneath it all lies a vulnerable warm heart (not to mention a tasty six-pack). An incident happens which reveals that Em is an exclusive top, and Lance tries in his gentle way to make him see that that's not promoting equality in the relationship. Even more fascinating in this fantasy is the role played by fame itself. Because of their status, the relationship must be kept secret to all (eventually, Dr. Dre finds out - but there are no villains in this piece). An actually moving scene occurs at a party where both Lance and Em make an appearance - and Em looks right through Lance as if he doesn't exist. Lance is wounded, but of course, he understands - he, too, pays the price of fame. None of the very gay characters who appear throughout have the freedom or desire to come out - it's a giant party closet. The author does not deal with this issue naively - s/he recognizes the complexity of the problem and allows it to continually interfere in the relationship, positing it as the one force that could tear the lovers apart. I admire the boldness and inventiveness of the writer to take on such an intriguing interpretation of Eminem's fabled homophobia and turn it into a discourse on the meaning of fame and homosexual identity. Fanfiction.net used to have lots of yuri/yaoi/shounen-ai stuffs in there. But that's just gross even for me. N'SYNC and Eminem... yuckage. Nothing beats the androgenous bishounen from anime/manga glomping on each other. ik wil graag die shit anders kill ik jullie.. Posted by: hailly on December 23, 2002 08:12 AMare crush-maker MUDs really limited to low tech fan fiction solutions? i guess so, given how fast people grow bored of trying to make their SIMs fall in love (no gratifying sex scenes...).
