My Leather Vest's at the Cleaner's
This weekend in Los Gatos, a snark of nerds (okay, what's the collective noun for nerds?) will collect to play NERO, a fantasy LARP with props and combat and costumes. I've tried LARPing in a hotel basement, which was a little less than ideal. This time might be my chance. But what to wear?!? Fellow girl-geek and attendee Min Jung mentioned something about "hoops" so I know she's got a costume of some sort. And Ernie will certainly have something going, that sassy boy. Darn it, where did I put that corset? And could I justify a camera as a magical item of some sort? Posted by jane at October 13, 2003 12:04 AM | TrackBackComments
Jane, the photo galleries on the Nero web site lead me to believe that a camera would be allowed - you could be a sniper elf archer woman with a camera instead of a bow. Maybe those pictures were taken by an officially authorized soul-stealer though! Posted by: justin on October 13, 2003 02:03 AMAt some point, come back to reality and realize finding a way to excuse the camera pales in comparison to excusing this for anything other than the funniest damn thing in the world. Well, next to the scariest damn thing Thanks for nightmares. *shivers* You know, when I was a kid as far as I ever went was taking the rubber handles off my bike and attaching them to PVC pipes to make swords. Wow, that brings back memories. Damn. Posted by: Draigon on October 13, 2003 06:18 AMyou know, i tried one of those once in college, but i just couldn't take it seriously long enough to be a very good player. acting is one thing, because the characters are their roles are more defined. but watching other people try to act like they are something else, well, it was both confusing and entertaining. i think i already analyze people too much, so it was confusing because i never felt like i was dealing with a "real person". entertaining because you get to see people's id start to take over in ways that would otherwise be difficult to see. i'm going to have to stick to electronic rpging. Posted by: justin on October 13, 2003 10:42 AMNo, no, MJ meant hoops like these. But there's bunches of circle of power jokes waiting to happen there. As for costuming, check yr email! Posted by: Jason on October 13, 2003 01:36 PMoh... okay. i think i understand now. but what about the reference to your magic stuff? Posted by: jane on October 13, 2003 01:59 PMwow Jane, I never thought you would get involved with NERO. I have to say that it is definitely something worth trying once, especially being a game- (auter, journalist, fanatic? can't find the word) - uh, person that you are. LARPing like NERO can give you many insights of elements of games in general and why people play them. As for costume advice, one of the coolest things about NERO is costuming. I would say though, don't get too elaborate for your first time. Since you don't know if you'll like it or not (but I can imagine you will). Anyways, NERO is actually pretty physical, you will be running in fear, you'll probably "die" once or twice, which means you'll be on the ground and stuff. So I say rummage through the local thrift store, the best is with someone who's played the game before, and try to pick out different potential articles that can be combined to be turned into a costume. Another consideration is what exactly you are going to be? I haven't played in a couple years (always have to work on the weekends), but I'm a 13th level earth scholar who looks a lot like a cross between Fizban, Gandalf, and Raiden as he looked in the Mortal Kombat movie. Pretty much my costume consists of a karate gi, thick rope belt with loops to carry my daggers, some sort of green robe I picked up at a Salvation Army, boots (more for comfort than costume), a white wig (because my character is 73 and I on the other hand am 23) and a rice paddy hat which has the disadvantages of catching the wind when I'm running but gives me the advantage of having nice cool shade when I'm not. Plus it just looks darn cool. But I also play a human, so I don't need any makeup. I say go as a human your first event, most chapters let you rewrite your second time. Whatever you do, have fun! Keep an open mind, don't worry about not knowing all the rules, and don't be afraid to roleplay. And let us know about your experiences! Lucas Posted by: lukeyes on October 13, 2003 07:11 PMFrom the pics on the site, looks like there's a fairly heavy furry influence. Why that instills a bit of fear in me while the LARP itself doesnt, I dunno. Posted by: chris on October 13, 2003 08:32 PMoh... okay. i think i understand now. but what about the reference to your magic stuff? Probably because I play a healer/magician. I've got a crate of stuff I haul to games, about half of which I actually use: my boots and other costuming, a dagger, coinage and spell packets (little cloth packets filled with birdseed you throw at people, used to represent magic—probably what Min Jung was referring to). The rest is stuff that may come in handy, like extra bits of costuming in case people need it, tiny bottles to represent potions, extra notepads, that sort of thing.
