Microsoft-Japan Puts the X in Xbox
Code Junkies is carrying a short blurb about Microsoft's latest effort to get the Japanese consumer to sacrifice valuable space and buy an Xbox: a satellite TV show devoted to the console. (beat) Co-hosted by Eri Kitajima, a popular soft porn model. Back when the Xbox was still in development, Microsoft talked about how the Xbox was going to be more open to unusual games, and aimed at a more mature audience than Sony or Nintendo would allow. I don't think they ever really made good on that, but maybe we're seeing some of the bizarre mutant vestiges of that promise here? Posted by ClockworkGrue at May 26, 2004 10:43 AM | TrackBackComments
I'm scared to think of the type of game this could bring about, then again, there's a market for everything. Posted by: Wendy on May 26, 2004 11:04 AMSex sells. Microsoft must of run out of marketing ideas for Japan and decided to use the one hook that will get attention, specially male. Sex sells. Microsoft had to fall back on the fast and easy way to get attention, specially male. Use a good looking woman to sell your product. Posted by: Char on May 26, 2004 02:30 PMWow. Six duplicates. I think that's a record. Don't blame Charmaine, though. I've never encounted a "comment" feature as screwed up as GGA's is. Type your comment, click "Post," and get comfortable for the SEVERAL MINUTES it takes for the post to register - assuming it even does. As for this XBox business, we should count our blessings. Microsoft could have hired one of those hentai tentacles... Posted by: BrainFromArous on May 26, 2004 07:41 PMI've had worse comment-wise here... Around 20 minutes for the window to complete, and until the next day to actually display. The comment system here is well beyond broken, as I can't figure out how it can be that bad short of being actually programmed that way to discourage posting. As for the Xbox, no big surprise. Microsoft is trying everything they can. They might as well give the system away, and that might not even be enough to sell more games in Japan. Posted by: Baines on May 26, 2004 10:09 PMDon’t like the strategy. Xbox marketing division should be more creative than that, Posted by: Bauq on May 27, 2004 08:03 PMI got an error both times so I did not think my post went through. Sorry. Posted by: Sorry, Char on May 28, 2004 11:22 AMDon't apologize, Char. It's not your fault. Posted by: BrainFromArous on May 28, 2004 01:18 PMI'm not sure I understand. I don't think she is going to strip on air so is this much different than booth babes? Sure it is a pretty blatant attempt to get attention from men, but that is hardly unheard of in the gaming industry. Posted by: Jordan on May 29, 2004 07:33 PMI'm not sure I understand. Posted by: Jordan on May 29, 2004 07:36 PMI find it amusing that some people are made uncomfortable by this. The game-playing demographic is no longer composed primarily of children (and I think this is true especially outside the U.S.). Now, my question would be: does this woman actually play games (a la Asia Carrera, who should have her own show on G4/Tech TV), or is she just empty-suit eye-candy? that girl ain't hot at all...she's so ugly...look http://www.hartware.net/news_36534.html Posted by: uuu on June 4, 2004 05:14 PMthat girl ain't hot at all...she's so ugly...look http://www.hartware.net/news_36534.html Posted by: uuu on June 4, 2004 05:15 PMI never liked Microsoft Japan from the time I talked to a few of their employees (arrogant) - but from the blow-up dolls to adult-video star show host....I find the not-so-quite-subtle hint of how MS perceives the Japanese gamer demographic rather insulting.
