I'm not sure that's an entirely bad thing... A little surprising, but not bad.

Maybe if the world in general were to ban aggressive behaviour from computer games, we might get a few more innovative titles. Hell, we would HAVE to - or the industry would shut down entirely.

dictatorial regimes are frightened of anything that may cause "aggresive" behavior because they are, by nature, astoundingly afraid of their people. oppression breeds fear and fear brings reprisal. still, i think this has more to do with the chinese governement not wanting their poeple to have any unmonitored contact with those of the outside world than it does with them wanting to protect thier people from agression-inducing media. there's already locks and government filters on 'net content (which, by most reports fail miserably to actually keep people from seeing what they're determined to see), this seems the next logical step in preserving the government-prescribed monoculture.

Actually, no... Whilst I'm not usually pro-censorship, it might serve my desires for the gaming industry! We seem to have gotten to the point where the vast majority of 'properly-shipped' (what's the correct word?) titles rely at least partially - and usually heavily - on combat.

Whilst my current project is mostly about building a functioning portion of a city, defending that portion-of-a-city relies on combat. Even spore, for all its anticipated joys, hasn't escaped the combat.

Then again, to be fair, violence and combat are quite different...

Whilst I don't think the violence is harming the kiddies, I don't think it should be the main component of the vast majority of games. Mostly because the games where it is the major component are, in my humble opinion, mostly crap.

I honestly do think that, by forcing developers and publishers to proceed with other types of titles, we could end up with a bit more diversity on the shelves.

And I must say that your suggestion of the reasons behind this seems a little... extreme.
