Psst... Have a peek at the ETA. :-)

sounds...interesting. maybe it's going to be a bastardized GTA, top-down view and all. i definitely think this game is geared towards the new line of GBA's coming out around the same time. the GBA Special Edition looks freakin' awesome. oh yeah.

jon

GBA SP!

I think you're just trolling here, because you certainly know the answer. Publishers distribute handheld versions of most top titles, and it's not really a matter of concern that handheld devices aren't able to reproduce the experience. Game publishing is a difficult business in which to make a buck, and extension of the franchise to the handheld is inexpensive and moderately profitable. Some developers, like Vicarious Visions, do a great job of extending the creative potential of GBA, but it's still a cruddy little device.

Stewart

"Game publishing is a difficult business in which to make a buck ..."

Cf., the last EA press release(http://info.ea.com/pr/pr286.pdf):

"today announced record financial results for the fiscal quarter ended December 31, 2002. Consolidated net revenues for the quarter were $1.23 billion, up 48 percent compared with $833 million for the fiscal quarter ending December 31, 2001 ... Consolidated net income for the quarter was $250 million, an 89 percent increase over the prior year. Diluted earnings per share for the quarter was $1.69, up 84 percent, or $0.77, year over year."

(Also, 2002 U.S. games software sales were up 21% over the already record 2001. Can't be *that* hard.)

Bowler

Using EA as an example of the state of the industry is like using Microsoft's track record to try and prove that a start-up PC software company has the potential to make it rich.

Take a look at the number 2, 3, and 4th place 3rd party publisher's stocks: THQ, Midway, Acclaim. They're not even half as good as EA's revenue. In fact, most of them are in the crapper and trying to figure out how to stay afloat.

It's not that easy to make money in videogames anymore. The cost of making games is rising dramatically, and the bottom line is staying the same. Profits have to be made somehow, ergo the cheap and easy buck on the handheld. But I still think GTA3 is a bad idea.

I'd wager it's going to look a lot like the previous GTA incarnations: top down and not a lot of get-out-of-your-car interaction.

Stewart

Good points Bowler - I concede.

(Tho' I maintain that there is plenty to be made in the business for people doing the right stuff --- look at NCSoft's latest earnings, or think of cheap-as-hell games like Roller Coaster Tycoon making it big. Putting out a mediocre product that is hard to distinguish from all the other mediocre products doesn't work in any industry, so I don't think the problem is particular to the games business.)

gta3 was designed for the gba sp not the old one i think it will be a all right game, but it wont be as good on the ps2 obviously

GTA3 on GBA could have been something, considering
Crazy Taxi, Driver 2 and even Quake can be done on the little beast.

Links-

Crazy Taxi GBA- http://www.gamespot.com/gba/driving/crazytaxicatcharide/screenindex.html

Driver 2 GBA-http://www.gamespot.com/gba/driving/driver2advance/index.html

Quake and Quake 2 GBA - http://www.bobbeetec.com/drg.htm

GTA3 could have been given a good run on the GBA.

I think the New GTA 3 will be Full 3D allthough obviously less detail than the PS2/PC versions. You can buy blank cratreges (for roms) for GBA's on the net that store over a Gigabyte of info and have any of you seen driver 2 for GBA? 4 full cities, full 3D and you can get out of the car and into any others in the City. i know this for a fact because i own a copy of it for my GBA. i cant wait for GBA GTA3 i think its gonna b awsome. and BTW the GBA SP is only a little faster, not alot in it! (my m8 has one)

Mechanical6

GTA3 could very well be done on the GBA in 3D fashion. Check out Payback.A GTA clone in development for the GBA and looking mighty fun.

I believe that there was a 3rd party dev company involved in building a new engine specifically for GTA3 on the GBA. It looked pretty impressive from screen shots as well - obviously not as good as the PS2 or PC and certainly not taking the series any place the others haven't already been except into the portable arena. Last I heard it had all fallen through and Rockstar pulled out resulting in the developers losing the licence but they stated that they would go ahead and develop the engine and make a game similar to GTA3 out of it anyway. That was a few months back now, if I find any links to them I'll sling 'em up. Oh, and their ain't no way the cover art on that gamestop link is Rockstar authorised.
